Are you from this town???? If so, then it is a simple drive to have Thanksgiving with family. But for those of us with family 6-14 hours away, it is very difficult.
teachers had nothing scheduled to do those two days at Thanksgiving. It was ridiculous. Why are we bowing down to the affluent and ignorant families who chose to miss those days? Let them home school if they dont like the school schedule.
When I was a kid, back when government was small and America was civilized, we went to school from September through June. Everyone was happy, we were given a real education which actually prepared us for college and we didn't have air-conditioning. No one died of heat prostration and no one murdered their classmates.
The question I have is this about the students or the employees of the school wanting to schedule the hoidays off and blame it on the students? The schools should help teach responsibility. I dont see stores and other companys shutting down for a week. Giiving in is just teaching students its ok to be out and when they get older and start working they will want to continue this pattern. We should not change the rules for the ones that stay out. Alot of students enjoy going to school during this time. Just my opinion.
Its about the money. Schools lose state money when kids are absent. By the parents keeping the students out those days around the holidays it cost the system money. They can say its about anything they want but we all know its about the money.
It's nice to know that Kate from Decatur knows what teachers are doing in their classrooms!!! I will bet you the closest she's ever been to a school was what she reads in the paper. Sounds like she's on her high horse holier than thou trip too. Before you spout off, think about what you are going to type.....and hit that little "x" in the upper right hand corner of your screen.
My children all graduated from Decatur Schools, going from September until June each year. They learnd and I as a parent schedule our vacation during the offical summer time. What is wrong with the schools is that to many listen to parents and not to the requirements of education. We all know that schools dont have no more money, but scheduling weeks off because some dont come to school during Thanks Giving or Christmas. Count them as as absent and see how they can complete the Subjects that they have mist. Short and Simple.
Kate goes to her son's school regularly and in the 4th grade he completed 7 holiday craft projects... SEVEN... really??? Even in Spanish class.. I was not in every classroom, that is for sure, but this is a trend I have seen more and more often. No one has to like other's opinions, but don't get upset because someone has one. Make your own point about the real topic and stop the personal attacks.
if you have family that lives 6-14 hrs away & you cant visit & have the kids back in school on monday ( 4days later,thursday,friday,saturday,sunday...) leave the house sooner. If the parent doesnt have the child back in school after 4days out then let them pay for it. Back in the day seemed to work out alot better than does the way they do things now, back then kids were just that "the kid" & the parent was the "parent", & kids done what they were told & respected adults, parents, teachers etc. Now look at how "kids" do. you cant make them behave in walmart when they showing their a**, without dirty looks & the law or dhr getting called. We actually had a summer break.
A week off for thanksgiving is crazy.
sounds like they just want more off days than school days

@ First....yeah that was back when they taught American History and the principles the founding Fathers had in mind when they
came up with a Constitution that meant something.
That was before the constitution was shredded by lobbyist.
