Getting what you pay for
In the interest of full disclosure, let me begin by acknowledging that my wife is a public school teacher — soon to complete her 20th year. I have nothing but the highest admiration for her. She … More »

I don't always agree with Dr. Evans, but I agree with him on this 100%. That was the most ridiculus statement yet from a presumably educated man. It helps him to get a raise, but corrupts teachers to get a raise? I will definitely remember the name McGill!! (P.S. I don't teach, either--it just seems very hypocritical to have the nerve to make a statement like that)!

Lets take his statement and apply it to football! Why are colleges paying their football coaches millions of dollars a year to coach their schools team onto a National Championship, Are they doing it because they want a coach that has a "calling" to coach. No, they want the best coach they can get. Shouldn't you want the best teachers you can get for your children?

Dr. Evans surely remembers the days when the same principle was asserted to keep preacher's pay low. Look at the Catholics, don't pay anything except room and board. Yes, the Senator was either stupid, or was saying such tongue in cheek to make a point. I would hope the latter.

My wife too was a teacher a good one , but the pay is terrible and now the circumstances in our schools are horrible , young disrespectful children with no raising , she got fed up with all of it and quit - - parents now teach their children no respect for anyone or themselves and it gets worse every year , the last year she taught was one of the worst years the decatur school system had seen for student behavior problems , and they have grown up just like their parents , disrespectful and in trouble all the time. teachers can,t instill good virtues in all their students the parents have a job to do too , its hard enough teaching without disruptions from half your students not wanting to learn or behave or do any work because their parents tell them they have the right to do as they please. - - then the state cuts pay and raises and retirement - - they should all quit

"Of course, that logic did not stop him from voting for a pay increase for himself and other state legislators."

Reverend, I understand that you are trying to make a point, but please be aware of the following fact.

The pay increase that you refer to was voted on and passed by the Alabama House and Senate in 2007.

Senator McGill was elected to office in 2010

He did not vote for a pay increase for himself and other state legislators.

Whether he voted for the raise for himself or not, he certainly, by his comments, approved of it. From relatives and friends in teaching, it has really gotten harder to actually "teach", and with the constant using of them as scapegoats by elected officials, it is no wonder that many veteran teachers have gotten discouraged. It is also no wonder they are often disrespected by their students. I have so much respect for a lot my teachers, and wish that teachers today could be rewarded with that respect, and a good pay raise wouldn't hurt either.

The facts reported by Ted show why Brother Evans should discuss religion and not politics. He might know something about religion. Hangdog

I thought preachers were not supposed to be political.....something humanists like Evans call separation of church and state...problem is they see the government of man as their god.....
